How the New Zealand Trick Actually Works
The trick works because Xbox and the Windows Xbox App check your system region for launch timing. Once your platform thinks you are located in New Zealand, the unlock timer updates to New Zealand’s midnight release.
This only affects Microsoft Store versions of the game.
Supported Platforms
  • Xbox Series X|S
  • Windows PC using the Xbox App or Microsoft Store version
Unsupported Platforms
  • Steam
Steam uses a synchronized global launch time, so changing your region does nothing there.
What You Need Before Trying It
Before switching regions, make sure everything is ready.
Required Game Access
You need one of the following:
  • Premium Edition
  • Premium Upgrade Bundle
  • Standard Edition or Game Pass version once the normal launch date arrives
Premium owners get Early Access starting May 15, 2026, while the full launch arrives on May 19, 2026.
Fully Preload the Game
Do not wait until the last minute.
FH6 is huge. The install size is around 130+ GB, depending on platform updates and texture packs. Download everything before switching regions.
Use the Main Purchasing Account
If you rely on game sharing, the trick may fail.
The Xbox profile launching the game should be:
  • The actual purchaser of the game
  • Or the primary Game Pass Ultimate owner
A lot of failed unlock attempts come from shared-account setups.

Step-by-Step Xbox Series X|S Guide
This is the fastest and most reliable method.
Step 1: Open Xbox Settings
Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide menu.
Go to:
Profile & system → Settings
Step 2: Enter System Settings
Inside Settings:
  • Open the System tab
  • Select Language & location
Step 3: Change Your Region
Find the Location dropdown menu.
Change it to:
New Zealand
Leave your language settings alone unless you actually want the console UI changed too.
Step 4: Restart the Console
Select:
  • Restart now
The region change does not apply until the console reboots.
Step 5: Launch FH6
Once New Zealand reaches midnight:
  • Open your game library
  • Launch FH6 normally
If the servers are live, you should load directly into the game.

Step-by-Step PC Guide (Xbox App)
PC players using the Xbox App can also use the trick.
Step 1: Fully Close the Xbox App
Exit:
  • Xbox App
  • Xbox services in the system tray
  • Microsoft Store if it is open
Step 2: Open Windows Settings
Press:
Win + I
Then navigate to:
Time & language → Language & region
Step 3: Change Your Region
Scroll to:
  • Country or region
Select:
  • New Zealand
Step 4: Relaunch the Xbox App
Open the Xbox App again.
The countdown timer should refresh automatically.
Once New Zealand hits midnight, the Play button should unlock.

Common Problems and Fixes
Even experienced players sometimes hit issues with the New Zealand Trick.
Here are the most common problems.
“You’re Too Early”
Usually caused by:
  • Console not restarted
  • Wrong game edition
  • Servers not fully live yet
  • Game sharing limitations
Restarting the platform fixes this most of the time.
DLC Content Missing
This is normal.
Many premium bonuses are region locked separately from the base game.
That means:
  • VIP
  • Car Pass
  • Welcome Pack
  • Some DLC cars
may remain unavailable until your local midnight release arrives.
You can still play the main game early.
Infinite Loading or Store Errors
Try:
  • Fully closing the game
  • Restarting the Xbox App
  • Power cycling the console
  • Logging out and back into Xbox Live
Launch windows are always messy for huge games like FH6.

Best Practices for a Smooth Early Launch
Veteran Xbox players usually follow a few extra rules to avoid problems.
Launch 10–15 Minutes After Midnight
Do not spam the Play button exactly at midnight.
Microsoft servers sometimes take several minutes to activate licenses worldwide.
Waiting a bit saves frustration.
Keep Your Internet Stable
FH6 relies heavily on online services:
  • Convoys
  • Auction House
  • Shared world events
  • Horizon Play matchmaking
A weak connection can block login verification.
Avoid Constant Region Swapping
Switch once.
Play the game.
Leave it alone until your real release arrives.
Repeated region flipping sometimes causes store sync issues.

Should You Switch Back Later?
Yes.
Once FH6 officially launches in your home region:
  • Return to your original location settings
  • Restart your platform again
Your save data automatically syncs through Xbox cloud services, so your progress stays safe.
That includes:
  • Cars
  • Credits
  • Houses
  • Festival progression
  • Collection rewards
You will not lose anything by reverting back.

Is the New Zealand Trick Safe?
Historically, yes.
Xbox players have used this method for years across major releases:
  • Racing games
  • RPG launches
  • Shooters
  • Sports titles
You are not modifying files or hacking servers. You are simply changing your regional settings inside Microsoft’s own system menu.
As long as you use the official Xbox ecosystem, there is no major risk tied to the trick itself.
The New Zealand Trick remains the easiest way to start playing Forza Horizon 6 ahead of schedule on Xbox and the Windows Xbox App.
If you prepare properly, preload the game early, and use the correct account ownership setup, the process usually takes less than five minutes.
And honestly, getting onto FH6’s Tokyo expressways and mountain drift roads hours before everyone else feels amazing.
